We get asked this question alot, "when should I hire musicians for my wedding?" or party. It is truly one of the most important items on your wedding checklist because the hiring the right wedding musicians or themed music for your party( or any type of music for any occasion for that matter) will make your special day memorable for everyone.

The truth is, it all depends on what type of musicians you want to hire, how popular the bands is, and who else is considering hiring that same band or musician for their wedding.

People sometimes hire musicians like the Spotlight Band and our other popular dance, variety bands for their live wedding entertainment as far out as a year and a half, especially for Saturday weddings. Most of the wedding bands we work with are highly popular and in great demand because they are the best wedding entertainment in Colorado (of course!).

You might call two weeks ahead and luck out in finding a dance band available that you want to hire – you just never know. The key is to have your venue and date secured, then, if you find a wedding band you like, hire the musicians you want immediately before someone else does.

If you need a soloist or string quartet for your wedding ceremony, this will be a bit easier. Still, you should try to hire musicians at least 3 months out and 6 months is even better. If you only want wedding standard, classical musicians will be able to step in on a moment's nostice, of course; but, if you have special music requests, the earlier you hire the musicians for your wedding, the more time you give them to learn and perfect your music. Plus, you will be able to breathe easier knowing that you have this item checked off on your wedding checklist!

Including wedding ceremony music is pretty much a standard for today's weddings. But sometimes people think it's okay to just have the DJ play music for the ceremony, then move inside to handle the wedding reception music.

Whether you hire a DJ, classical ensemble or a dance band for your wedding reception entertainment, we recommend you use live musicians for your wedding ceremony music. Here's why…

The average length of time it takes for a bride to walk down the aisle (or as we often experience in Colorado, a mountain path) is somewhere between 10 and 30 seconds but the recordings a DJ would use are somewhere between 2 and 4 minutes long. With many favorite classical songs, that 30-second walk is over before you get to the part of the music people recognize. That means that a DJ has to fade out the music they are using when the bride reaches the altar so that she and the bridal party don’t have to stand there waiting awkwardly for several minutes until the song is over. A string quartet, solo ceremony musician, or other classical ensemble will have the distinct advantage of being able to begin the song at the right place and can time the music on the spot, ending pieces more gracefully and musically. Plus, live music is more elegant!

Clearly, we feel very strongly that you should use real musicians, not CD’s, for your wedding ceremony music and we can help with that!

Most of our dance bands are able to provide a smaller ensemble for your ceremony. This might be a solo guitarist, a flute and guitar duo, a keyboardist, etc. It really depends on the band you hire. In any case, just let us know and we can help you find the right fit. Call or email anytime!

The Knot Real Wedding

We've been named the Best of the Knot and now, we've had one of our best wedding bands in Colorado mentioned in the magazine!

The Knot featured the real wedding of Ryan and Caki Cook.

The reception took place at the University Club downtown and featured the Spotlight Band for the entertainment. Spotlight Band leader, Matt Bassano, says, "This wedding was unusual in that the bride and groom wanted a gospel choir to sing the choir parts on the Rollings Stones tune, You Can't Always Get What You Want. We hired Shiva Maxey's group. The choir couldn't get through the crowd at first so they started singing from where they were, right there on the dance floor among the guests. It was one of the great moments in our history. The crowd went nuts, everyone sang, and we had a blast!"

We have been named the Best of the Knot again in 2012. Brides have voted us Best of the Knot for wedding music five years in a row. We must be doing something right!

Should I Hire a Band or a DJ?

Many couples have a difficult time deciding whether to hire a dance band for their wedding or a DJ. Here are some considerations to help you choose.

There are different types of Bands and different types of DJs…

A wedding DJ is different from a club DJ or a hip-hop DJ just as a dance band that specializes in weddings is different from a bar band or a show band. Both DJs and the best wedding dance bands have a wide repertoire to delight all ages and musical tastes. Other types of bands and DJs, though great in their own fields, won’t have the wide repertoire, experience with all the genres of music, and understanding of how weddings flow that an experienced wedding band or DJ will have. Also, a good wedding dance band or DJ understands that the party is not about them, it’s about you!

The Ceremony

For your wedding ceremony music, always go with live musicians. The reason: a DJ’s recording of Pachelbel’s Canon is 3 minutes long but you may only need 30 seconds as you walk down the aisle… the DJ is going to have to simply fade the track out which will sound awkward. Wedding musicians, on the other hand, pick a good place to end the piece, so the song actually ends rather than just fading out.

The Reception

With music for the wedding reception, it’s not as cut and dried…

1) Live music adds a special touch you and your guests will remember for years to come. Just as Danny, a groom who hired the Spotlight Band, the best dance band in Colorado said, “If only our friends had a wedding reception band like this I would’ve quit whining during the first song!”

2) A DJ will generally (not always) be cheaper than a wedding reception band, although sometimes not by much, and if you’re planning a longer reception, various things can change that. For example, a string quartet and a DJ may cost as much as 75% of the price of a live dance band that can play the wedding ceremony, background music for cocktails and dinner, then launch into dance music for the rest of the night.

3) A dance band will be higher energy because real instruments just simply kick harder than a recording. Of course, it had better be a good party band that also knows when NOT to be loud and high energy, such as during dinner!

4) A DJ should have a huge selection on hand; however, if the bride and groom pick their favorites in advance, a really good wedding reception band (such as the Spotlight Band) can absolutely play as wide a variety as a DJ… and, again, it’ll kick harder, giving your entire reception more energy than someone can create by playing CDs.
Every situation is different, so call us to work out what combination of live musicians, wedding ceremony ensembles, wedding reception bands, and DJ’s will work best for you!
